Rotarians support the Library Project

New library on Changxing Island

On November 19th, a group of Shanghai Interacters, Rotaractors and Rotarians took a trip to Changxing Island to support a local school in expanding it library.

Rotarians were busy putting together bookshelves, sorting books and labelling them. Changxing Island, which belongs to Chongming County, is a rural, less developed area of Shanghai, which only recently, due to a new tunnel, became more closely connected to Shanghai proper. The Library Project supports rural schools around Shanghai with books and general support in order to further improve literacy and also to established a love of books. Currently the average Chinese reads about 4-5 books per year (US:17 books / year). As reading is one of the great joys of life and also helps to spread international understanding, this is well aligned with the mission of Rotary and especially of the RC Shanghai.

The Library Project donates books and libraries to under financed rural primary schools and orphanages in Asia. We believe education is the key motivator to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the developing world. As we see it, education is change.
