Andrew Hill
He is living “Service above Self” for years and enganged in many RCS activities; his energy to enable others is legendary: Andrew Hill was not only president of Rotary Club of Shanghai but is currently also holding the position of Assistant Governor. Pagoda portraits the person behind the office.
When did you join RCS and who was your sponsor?
My Sponsor was Justin Malley. I joined RCS in 2005
Where are you hailing from?
I am hailing from the USA. I grew up and lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota till I went to college at the age of 18. I have now been in China for 30 years.
What are you doing professionally?
I am a Business / Project Manager and Business Owner. My interest is developing companies that give back to the community. The name of my company is ELG. ELG provides a wide range of tailored resources for children to develop and learn effectively. Its services are dedicated to helping parents, schools and educators meet the individual needs of children. We work primarily in Shanghai and also service many areas in China. I am also a Chairman of an NGO I started in 2015 to improve the condition of special education in China.
What would you like to share with our readers about your family?
I am a typical person from Minnesota with Swedish and German roots. This means that I grew up with importance on traditions like Christmas and Lutheran ethics. I have a wonderful wife Cindy who is from Shanghai. She is an incredibly smart and strong woman who makes life an amazing pleasure. Many of you know Zach, my son, who is such a wonderful boy. He attends SAS on the Puxi Campus and loves playing the Tuba and Trombone. If you have any questions about Star Wars, he is the guy with the answers.
What are your hobbies, apart from RCS?
I love to study languages and cultures. At this time, I am studying German at the Goethe Institute with my wife. I LOVE music of many kinds, from Wagner to Joy Division to Tool. Another favorite hobby of mine is watching my son growing up.
How do you recharge your battery?
Reading, Travel and chatting with family and friends.
Best/Last book you read and why
I am reading I am Dynamite: A Life of Nietzche by Sue Prideaux. I have been fascinated by Nietzsche for most of my life and read all I can about him and his philosophy. Given I am also an avid amateur philologist, he connects with my thoughts and interests on many levels.
What is your favorite place in Shanghai?
Home is my favorite place, but that answer might be too boring so let me add another. The streets! I love walking the streets of Shanghai at night or early morning. I really love this town and its feel.
