The One Million Rotary Trees project fights desertification in China’s Qinghai province by improving local habitat and biodiversity. Desertification is endangering not only the arid area but the way of life of local nomads as well.

Key outcomes: Creating an environment for wildlife habitat to slow the rate of loss of biodiversity; building a sustainable ecosystem; promoting local community participation; protecting local property and lives from flooding; enhancing soil humidity, structure, and fertility (soil wealth protection).

Major achievements

  • Over 3,000 locals benefit with a survival rate of 95% for the planted trees. As locally initiated, locals are incentivized to engage through panning, planting, implementing, and owning the land so that plants are looked after perpetually, with the concept of protecting their homeland that can generate income.
